- notes
- Public beta launched 2026-09-10, corroborated by multiple independent launch-day writeups (MarkTechPost, KuCoin) though the vendor overview page itself does not carry an explicit date. Distinct from OpenAI's already-tracked Agents SDK (an in-process library) and Responses API (a lower-level, largely stateless agentic interface): the Agents API is a new OpenAI-managed hosted runtime. OpenAI manages sessions/orchestration/recovery while the caller supplies tools and chooses the execution environment: an OpenAI-hosted sandbox (same infra powering Codex/ChatGPT), the caller's own infrastructure, or a partner sandbox provider (Cloudflare confirmed by launch-day coverage; Vercel, Modal, and others reported but not independently verified, so the 'nine partner providers' count is dropped as unconfirmed). Sessions can be continued or steered mid-run. Hosting recorded as managed-only per the anthropic-managed-agents precedent (the harness itself is OpenAI-run even though the sandbox environment choice is flexible); the environment-choice nuance is captured above rather than in the hosting enum.
