- Opt-in camera mode where the image sensor reboots into a reference mode and, inside the sensor, signs the digitized frame together with an embedded metadata digest using the sensor's own private key; the Secure Enclave Processor separately signs a commitment to that signature plus additional metadata using a BAA-attested key; Apple's cryptographic timestamp service supplies a lower bound (embedded at capture) and, via a SHA-256 commitment sent after capture, a signed upper-bound token, bounding the capture window. The signed secure digital negative uploads to Private Cloud Compute, which recomputes the embedded digest, verifies the sensor's signature over the pixels, and develops and signs a viewable JPEG.

- A hardware-rooted, capture-time authenticity feature built into iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max (main camera sensor only) that lets a photographer produce a securely timestamped reference image proving what the sensor actually saw, without requiring the photographer to give up anonymity.
- distinctFrom
- Unlike c2pa (an open, cross-vendor metadata standard) or truepic (a third-party commercial C2PA certificate authority building hardware-capture products for enterprise customers), Apple Reference Image is a proprietary, first-party design rooted in Apple's own sensor private key, Secure Enclave, and Private Cloud Compute signing pipeline, not an implementation of C2PA Content Credentials.
- notes
- Announced 2026-09-09 alongside iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max; Apple's own technical design post published on Apple Security Research 2026-09-15 (the source cited here). Apple's own blog post does not mention SynthID or Google anywhere; the technical mechanism details (sensor private key, SEP/BAA-attested key, two-timestamp bound, PCC verification) are quoted verbatim from that same post. Secondary coverage conflicts on whether SynthID support is planned: fstoppers.com states support for Google's SynthID is coming as a separate layer, while digitalapplied.com reports no SynthID mention at all; since Apple's own primary source is silent on SynthID, no SynthID claim is asserted here per the no-policy, and no update was filed against the tracked synth-id entry. Out-of-lens flag for the orchestrator: this lens is scoped to arXiv and standards bodies, and Apple Reference Image is a proprietary vendor feature, not a paper or a standards-body release; included anyway as the best-sourced provenance find in the window, but should be deduped against any parallel vendor/product-lens run.
